The Road to Italy

It was a week ago today that we tumbled into the car and headed off into the rising sun for this vacation.  Amazingly, the roads were clear and we arrived at the Chunnel three hours before our booked departure, but they let us on early ‘at no extra cost’; hooray!  If you have not been on the Chunnel before, it is an experience not to be missed.  The train, which looks like some nuclear bunker from the cold war, is double-deck.  You enter it from the rear end and then drive right through to the front on the train, and cars back up behind in a long queue right to the back door.  I had the feeling that we had entered a long snake, bit like Nagini in Harry Potter, and that the beast would snake its way under the sea to France.  But once the doors to each carriage slid shut, it was more like being in an elevator.   So we, and four other cars, were elevated to France, twenty minutes and out the other end; magic.  When I think of all the times I have rolled about on channel ferries, stepping over puking passengers and observing the concrete set of excessive vomit set at funny angles in the sinks!  You know, on one trip back from St Malo, I think we were in a force twelve, whatever it was, it was a force to be reckoned with; it was so rough some of the cars got wrecked in the hold.  This Chunnel business is definitely the way to cross from England to anywhere, I love it.
