New beginnings - Getting past the addiction
Following on from the last blog, someone text me and asked what was the connection between OCD (is obsessive compulsive disorder), and addiction. Well, in the sense that I was talking about addiction, they are the same really. But first let me say this: I do not believe 'we have it or we don’t' models. For me, all people are the same. We all have the same traits and skills, problems, talents and issues, it is just that we manifest these in different ways and this we call individuality.

Sunshine month takes me away
We’re all going on a summer holiday
As I write this blog, the lads are loading the car, checking the oil and water in the engine. All I have to do now is to finish this, press send and then, as is my habit, check that the water bottles are full, back the car out of the drive and head for the horizon and the rising Sun. I love that feeling, the freedom of the open road and the wonder of not knowing what is around the next bend. I have Canned Heat playing in my head ‘...I’m on the road again’; it brings back so many good memories.
The dawn is such a magical time in all senses of the word. We use the image of the dawn to describe newness, breakthroughs, and new horizons: the dawn of the technical age, the dawn of the industrial society, the dawn of understanding. I see clients every day who experience that sense of coming into the light when, perhaps, for the first time in their lives, they can see things with a hitherto unknown clarity, as the truth dawns on them for the first time.
The person who is awake is always learning
In Ayurveda, my original training, it is acknowledged that the purpose of life is about learning, and that our body’s senses, mind and emotions are all designed to enable this to happen. Learning is a life-long process, though people may stop learning and growing at any age. Some people will cease development while in their childhood and may exhibit the emotional maturity of a seven-year old when they are seventy. However, the reverse may also be true, so that a seven-year old may possess the wisdom of a seventy-year old.
What is dawning on you?
If you are a growing, waking person, and I guess you are or you would not be reading this, there will be dreams, challenges and developments going on in your life that will represent new dawnings of understanding for you. I think about this a lot and review where I am up to. I use the contemplation part of my meditation sessions to do this, so dawnings are...
Time waits for no man
I often heard this one, but it is dawning on me that time passes quickly and it is easy to procrastinate; there are things that I want to do before I turn up my toes. I was reading something by Jack Canfield that suggested writing down the one hundred things you would like to do before you die. That got me thinking, so I have set myself some goals.
Things to be done
My top five are...
1) To develop my life and my relationships in such a way that they benefit not only me, but all those that I interact with, especially with my Rie.
2) To develop the courses so that I have at least one thousand people a year doing the Ten Steps Program
3) To get all the books written that I have in my head
4) To record more music albums and maybe do some performing
5) To create a purpose-built environmentally-friendly building that is used as a centre of learning, therapy and respite for those on the path of self-development
It dawned on me many years ago that the only way to achieve these things is to be focussed on the task and to be consistent and persistent in all that I do to achieve my aims.
What are your five?
You may be able to go for the hundred, though five is a good start. What are the things that it is dawning on you that need to be done? It is time to get them done. Try not to put off till tomorrow what you need to get done today.
Hey ho and away I go
But task number one is to go and enjoy my holiday. Tomorrow, I will wake in Lille France and then heading down through Belgium, Luxemburg and Switzerland to stay in Basil. Then the Italian lakes for a while and then back up through Mont Blanc and Dijon. Watch the site and I’ll keep you posted on progress and try and use this wonderful technology to post some pics on the site.
So pop by Wednesday and have a wonderful week.

You can’t have one without the other
First pray, then move your feet

So why doesn’t The Secret work for you?
One day, a student on one of my ‘Ten Steps to Change Your Life Forever’ programmes raised her hand and said, “This Law of Attraction stuff doesn’t work does it? I mean, I hate my job, but if I simply visualise having what I want and stop going to work, I won’t be able to pay my mortgage and I will be homeless.” I love things like this. Not only do they reveal the inner paradigm, but they articulate what many people are thinking and feeling but do not say. In response, I told a story.

Donkeys need carrots
Pedro was a good and honest man. Several times each week, he would visit the temple and listen to the teachings of the elders. He was told that, “The Lord would always provide” and that, “God would always answer his prayers”; “Ask and it will be given,” they told him. When he said that surely this could not be so, after all, his family often went to bed hungry and sometimes there was no wood for the stove, he was told by the elders that he had little faith and that to the clear heart, “All things are possible”.
Pedro thought if all things are possible then he would put this to the test and experiment. He decided that he would not feed his donkey, Sara, for twelve weeks and feed his children instead. He announced his plan to neighbours, who became intrigued. Each day, Pedro would take Sara a bucket of water which Sara lapped at happily. Each day, his neighbours would come by to see how it was going. At first, the experiment went well and Pedro and his neighbours were very impressed. It was obvious to them that, if you had faith, then surely anything really can be possible and we can have what we desire. All we need to do is believe. Some neighbours were so impressed by Pedro’s donkey that they followed suit and fed their children instead of their livestock.
Sadly, Pedro was unable to complete his experiment because at week six, half-way through his experiment, Sara died. “Oh, that is so sad,” he said, “now I will never know if my prayers would have been answered.”
Some of the students on my course nodded and laughed, but many looked dumbfounded. So, I tried again.
Wishful thinking
Mary was a good and honest woman. Each week, she would go to her course, ‘Ten Steps to Change Your Life Forever’, to learn about the Law of Attraction. She was told that “The Universe would always provide” and that “The Law of Attraction always brings to us that which we focus on”; “Ask and it will be given,” she was told. When she said that surely this could not be so, after all, she hated her job and her life, she was told by the course leader that to the focused mind, “All things are possible”.
Mary thought that if all things are possible then she would put this to the test and experiment. She decided that she would give up her job for one year, stop doing all the things that she hated in her life and allow the universe of abundance to provide. At first, the experiment went well and Mary and her friends were very impressed. Mary was happy, happier than she had been for many years. She visited friends she had not seen in a long time. She now laughed and was, seemingly, a completely different person. It was obvious to her friends that Mary had got it right and if you had faith then surely anything is possible, and we can have what we desire. All we need to do is believe. Some friends were so impressed by Mary’s new life that they followed suit and gave up their jobs too.
Sadly, Mary was unable to complete her experiment because at month six, half-way through her experiment, the mortgage company foreclosed on the loan, and Mary and her family were left on the street awaiting council accommodation. “Oh, that is so sad,” she said, “now I will never know if my positive attitude would have worked.”
More of the course members were nodding now. The pennies were starting to drop, but still some frowns and looks of confusion. So I tried gain.
The virtual sandwich
Fred is sitting in his lounge watching the ball game on his TV. He has read The Secret and he knows that “Thoughts become things”. He has spent time doing his daily affirmations and is feeling positive about his levels of manifestation in the world. He decides he is going to visualise a ham sandwich. He knows that if he visualises long enough, the ham sandwich will appear. He closes his eyes and envisions the ham sandwich. He can see it there before him on a plate. He sees the fresh bread, slices of ham hanging out, with touches of mayo and mustard. He decides to add a tomato and a garnish of rocket salad, and then a few cheese and onion crisps. His visualisation is so clear that he can even smell it and he begins to salivate. His visualisation is so clear that he is sure that when he opens his eyes, there it will be right there in front of him, and he will then have finally proved to himself that the Law of Attraction really does work and thoughts do really become things. Finally, with his hand raised, certain to take hold of his sandwich, he opens his eyes. There is nothing there.
The student looked at me again and said, “That’s it, it didn’t work did it? The Law of Attraction is a lie!”

First pray, then move your feet
The reason we have bodies is because we are a part of the physical universe. The only real power that we have in the physical world is to move things. We may move physical objects, but even if we wish to communicate, we need to move our tongue. The nature of being in a body is that we, like all other things, are subject to the laws of the universe. If you want something to happen, you have to do something, it is a part of the deal. To get the sandwich, you need to go to the kitchen and make it. To give up work and survive, you need to replace your way of manifesting money or resources, and if you deprive a living being of sustenance, it will die.
When people treat the Law of Attraction as wishful thinking, nothing changes and they are forever disappointed and confirmed in their paradigm beliefs that things do not change. They are right. If you do not act in the physical world, nothing will change.
So, number one is: what do you want? Number two is: what is it you are prepared to do to enable it to happen?
My teacher once told me that creativity is 2% inspiration and 98% perspiration. Those that have a naive idea of the Law of Attraction often believe it is the other way around. Don’t be fooled.
So if you want to have a good time this weekend, you will have to ensure that you do the things that will bring this about. Wishful thinking will not change anything. However, you should always remember that the decision to do nothing is an active decision, just as if you had decided to do something. Both decisions have an outcome.
Be happy. If you are on the Mind Bank, see you tomorrow. If not, see you Monday for a positive focus
