Sunshine month takes me away
We’re all going on a summer holiday
As I write this blog, the lads are loading the car, checking the oil and water in the engine. All I have to do now is to finish this, press send and then, as is my habit, check that the water bottles are full, back the car out of the drive and head for the horizon and the rising Sun. I love that feeling, the freedom of the open road and the wonder of not knowing what is around the next bend. I have Canned Heat playing in my head ‘...I’m on the road again’; it brings back so many good memories.
The dawn is such a magical time in all senses of the word. We use the image of the dawn to describe newness, breakthroughs, and new horizons: the dawn of the technical age, the dawn of the industrial society, the dawn of understanding. I see clients every day who experience that sense of coming into the light when, perhaps, for the first time in their lives, they can see things with a hitherto unknown clarity, as the truth dawns on them for the first time.
The person who is awake is always learning
In Ayurveda, my original training, it is acknowledged that the purpose of life is about learning, and that our body’s senses, mind and emotions are all designed to enable this to happen. Learning is a life-long process, though people may stop learning and growing at any age. Some people will cease development while in their childhood and may exhibit the emotional maturity of a seven-year old when they are seventy. However, the reverse may also be true, so that a seven-year old may possess the wisdom of a seventy-year old.
What is dawning on you?
If you are a growing, waking person, and I guess you are or you would not be reading this, there will be dreams, challenges and developments going on in your life that will represent new dawnings of understanding for you. I think about this a lot and review where I am up to. I use the contemplation part of my meditation sessions to do this, so dawnings are...
Time waits for no man
I often heard this one, but it is dawning on me that time passes quickly and it is easy to procrastinate; there are things that I want to do before I turn up my toes. I was reading something by Jack Canfield that suggested writing down the one hundred things you would like to do before you die. That got me thinking, so I have set myself some goals.
Things to be done
My top five are...
1) To develop my life and my relationships in such a way that they benefit not only me, but all those that I interact with, especially with my Rie.
2) To develop the courses so that I have at least one thousand people a year doing the Ten Steps Program
3) To get all the books written that I have in my head
4) To record more music albums and maybe do some performing
5) To create a purpose-built environmentally-friendly building that is used as a centre of learning, therapy and respite for those on the path of self-development
It dawned on me many years ago that the only way to achieve these things is to be focussed on the task and to be consistent and persistent in all that I do to achieve my aims.
What are your five?
You may be able to go for the hundred, though five is a good start. What are the things that it is dawning on you that need to be done? It is time to get them done. Try not to put off till tomorrow what you need to get done today.
Hey ho and away I go
But task number one is to go and enjoy my holiday. Tomorrow, I will wake in Lille France and then heading down through Belgium, Luxemburg and Switzerland to stay in Basil. Then the Italian lakes for a while and then back up through Mont Blanc and Dijon. Watch the site and I’ll keep you posted on progress and try and use this wonderful technology to post some pics on the site.
So pop by Wednesday and have a wonderful week.

Welcome to August. Here comes the Sun

Welcome to August
Here comes the Sun
And, so we are on to August, the month of summer sun and holidays; well, up in the northern hemisphere at least; well, at least, that is, except not in Britain as it seems to be raining a lot at the moment. But hey, sunshine is in your heart whatever is going on out there.
Watch the Sun in your heart
Over many years, I have sat with thousands of clients and watched their light come on as they have made the realisations that have changed their life. The light, for me, is the turning on of consciousness. We can describe a person as ‘the lights are on but no-one is at home’; well, in my work, it is often the reverse: ‘There is someone in there, it is just that their lights are not on.’ It is a magic moment when the lights flicker into life, realisation dawns and the person grows, changes and develops. It is that magic moment that Carl Rogers called ‘actualisation’. So, habitually, whenever I see someone light up, I hear George Harrison in my head singing, ‘Here comes the Sun, it’s alright’.
Finding the workers
That is the magic of the work I do. My aim is to follow the work of my teacher, who said that if, in his life, he could encourage ten people to work positively with others and if, in each of their lives, they did the same, in the end, the world would change and eventually become Heaven on Earth. And so it has been. I have been privileged to work with so many people as they wake up, their light comes on and they get on doing The Work.
What is The Work?
The Work is the natural flow of universal energy. I call it love. Those people that are The Workers are those that do what they can to make other people’s worlds better. Their aim is to right the wrongs they come across and to do their best to make the negative, positive. Many people will see this as futile, in favour of self-obsession and self-aggrandisement. In short, this is why some people, the majority, live in the dark in unfulfilled lives and a few live in the light of happiness. Yet we can all be happy; this is my work.
So where is your Sun?
Are you living in the shade or in the light? Are your emotions dark or light? Most importantly, do you realise that you have a choice, because you do? As John Lennon put it, ‘Maybe someday you’ll join us’; it is more fun living in the light. But it can seem to be an unending task; there are lot of negative people around.
Don’t let the bastards grind you down
Along with the current rainy weather, the world is populated by rainy people: ‘Don’t rain on my parade.’ You know that if you are reading this, then you are one of the 4% of the human population who are not asleep and you are now either awake or waking up. It is important to realise that, as the majority of people that you know, meet, work and live with will be asleep; they may not be in tune with you and your attempts to develop, maintain and create positive attitudes and energy. You will know who they are because they will moan. They will moan about their life, their job, the people that they know who have done bad things to them, and if you are really lucky, they will moan at you or even better still, they will moan about you.
Criticism and feedback
When I was a child, the atmosphere was not always as positive as it could have been and moaning was very much the watch word of the day. My family saw themselves as a bit special, compared to other families living in the same social housing units. The tool that was used to maintain the difference between ‘us’ and ‘them’ was criticism of everyone else. For me, it became apparent that I was also one of ’them’ and therefore the subject of criticism myself.
One interesting aspect of criticism is that it is often experienced by the criticiser as, ‘Well, I was only giving you some feedback’ or even worse, ‘If you don’t like it, you know what you can do, don’t you?’ The problem for me was that I didn’t know what to do and the criticism never stopped until I left home.
Taking back the power
When we find ourselves reacting to another person’s attitudes, be it tears, fear, anger, whatever, we have given them power over us. They are now pulling our strings. In this, we have lost control and given all the power to them. If we are going to reclaim our self and our emotions, we need to stand back and understand our emotions; it is only then that we have our power.
Sunny days
So, throughout August, ‘The Month of Sun’, we are going to be looking at how we can put back some Sun into our lives and be happy and turn on the light.
So, in the spirit of ‘Here comes the Sun’, let’s have another good month together.
So, with light and love, see you Wednesday.
